The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Inclusion in England's Ashes Squad
England have opted for a 12-man selection just two days before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise spot.
Bashir's selection suggests that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions suit four seamers or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the selected group, showing there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s fitness.
The other seamers round out the attack, with the latter most likely to miss out if Bashir enters the final team.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers
The England coach had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted five past matches.
In those games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Of those 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have just a handful.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side relying on seamers remains the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to offer some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
However the coach has opted to keep faith with Bashir, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so they perform and excel out here.”
